Notes for Frank Roberts
His daughter June said: “Frank Roberts and his brother Tom who died in the First World War were born just over a year apart. They both played the violin in the school orchestra and were offered jobs at the Hippodrome Variety Theatre in Llanelli, but their father would not allow it. They both went on to study to become teachers at Aberystwyth University until the outbreak of the War in which Tom was killed and Frank was wounded. Frank reached the rank of Captain and after the war was awarded the Military Cross. The citation records how “with 16 men and no officer, by judicious use of his Lewis guns he deceived the enemy as to his numbers and held on to his position for 24 hours without support on his flank, under heavy shell fire, inflicting considerable casualties on the enemy both with his own guns and with machine guns captured the day before”. After the war he returned to Aberystwyth where he met his wife Eluned and returned to Llanelli to join the family business. A keen sportsman in his youth, playing Rugby, boxing and rowing he was a talented and artistic florist who loved to work in the open air. In 1936 he was convinced, from his reading and his interest in current affairs, that war with Germany was inevitable. He and his brother Jack tried to enlist but were turned away because of their reserved occupation and he became a company comnmander in the Home Guard. He he had a number of heart attacks during his adult life and died at the Nurseries at the age of 66”.
