Robert Williams was said to have disappointed his parents because he did not settle down to study and took no interest in farming. Instead, he went to sea with his uncle who had a schooner which traded from Porthmadog. He met his wife in a sweet shop in New Quay in Cardiganshire. They married and settled there for the remainder of their lives, dying of old age within a few months of each other. One of the last of the old-time mariners who served under sail, if he ever yearned for North Wales, on a clear day he could see the summit of Snowdon from the end of New Quay pier.
