In 1789 Edward Wells is recorded in the Westminster Rate Books as living at 43 Old Pye Street in a notorious London slum know as the Devil’s Acre. His wife Elizabeth (according to witness evidence to an Old Bailey trial in 1789) ‘sold greens about the streets in a cart’.
