Notes for Captain David Dewsberry Evans
David Dewsberry trained at Sandhurst. A plaque to his memory in his father's church at Long Bredy in Dorset says he “died gallantly protecting one of his own men”. He was serving the 14th field regiment Royal Artillery at Nisab in Aden when he was shot dead with a machine gun by 21-year-old Lance Bombardier Harry Whiteside. Whiteside, who was said at the court martial to have a “violent anti-social history” and occasionally had mental blackouts had been involved in a dispute over a record player. He was sentenced to life imprisonment.
