In 1888 John Herbert Evans established the Western Wagon Works at 12, Great Western Crescent, Llanelli and the yard behind called Gathen Yard. He was helped in business by his brother William Valentine Evans, a wheelwright who built the first mail coach for Llanelly. The business later became JH Evans and Son. When JH retired, he took over the Polyn at Llanarthney, the pub that had been run by his grandfather William Evans, and changed its name back to the New Lodge Inn. When he died, he passed the pub to his son Griff who disposed of it for four hundred pounds.
